Homelessness is a real issue. There are currently over 116,000 homeless people in Australia.
And tonight they will sleep rough, cold and unsafe.
While we have dinner with our loved ones and go to sleep in a warm bed.
To make matters worse, 10% of the homeless are children under 12 years old
As an immigrant myself, I am saddened to learn that 46% of the homeless are actually born overseas.
These people are invisible and we need to give voice to those who do not have one.
Why does this matter?
Because human dignity is an issue we must put on the table.
Being homeless isn’t something we simply accept as a part of life.
What we walk past is what we accept.
The causes of homelessness are varied and complex.
Family violence remains the leading cause in Australia, especially for women and children.
This problem is actually growing.
Emergency accommodation can’t keep up: tonight, homelessness services will turn away about 250 people they’re unable to provide with a bed.
When I was working multiple jobs I was barely able to keep a roof over my head.
Pay my school fees and study at the same time.
I had to live with junkies and was often verbally abused or had my things stolen.
It was tough.
But homelessness is not an unsolvable problem.
Their voices are important. They deserve to be heard.
Access to safe and secure housing is one of the most basic human rights.
You’re probably thinking how can one person make a difference.
Well unlike many who just talk about it, I’m going to do something.

This year I’m taking part in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout to raise money for the St Vincent de Paul Society to support Australians in need.
For one night, I’ll be sleeping outside as part of an eye-opening experience to raise awareness and bring home the realities of homelessness.
This will take place on one of the coldest nights of the year, 20th June.
To help break the devastating cycle of homelessness, I need your support.
Will you help me to reach my target?
Donating 50 dollars can make a huge difference to people who need it most.
I’ve set a goal to raise $5000
